Teaching in a Classroom Without Connections
One observed trait of Gen Z professionals is the strategic communication which is manipulative or laid with calculations. They have a high awareness of the system, its expectations and the outcomes. This awareness is beneficial in navigating complex situations but at times it translates into clever maneuvering where their personal convenience is often prioritized over their responsibility. This is very much evident in the field of teaching where the focus has shifted from nurturing minds to just completing their tasks.
Another major concern is the increase in the over use of digitalized tools and their reliance over those tools. Gen Z teachers use AI tools for content creation and delivery. Too much reliance on these tools dilutes originality, critical thinking and the teacher's involvement with the topic/subject. The greatest damage is to the students who receive the knowledge imparted through such teachers as it may be accurate at times but lacks in contextual sensitivity, depth and passion.
An equally troubling factor is the lack of accountability and consistency. There are instances of lack of preparation, minimal effort in planning lessons or last-minute cancellations that throw light on the broader shift developing in the work ethics. The bragging about work-life balance makes them inadvertently progress on the path of becoming casual towards their responsibilities as a teacher. In the field of academics where students depend mostly on the guidance and stability of a teacher, such inconsistencies have a lasting negative impact on the life of students.
The most significant concern is the emphasis on empathy which is diminishing. Teaching is an intellectual exercise; deeply emotional and relational. A teacher must be able to understand students, their struggles and build an environment that is central to meaningful education. The attitude of Gen Z teachers makes education a transactional process rather than a transformative experience for the students. They think that students do not understand their manipulation/sweet talk/games they play. They fail to realize that students are very smart and understand how such teachers are but do not cross the line because of various reasons: marks, attendance, being in the good books of teachers, fear of the system etc.
To avoid sweeping generalizations about the Gen Z which is not a monolith, one also finds such young teachers who demonstrate remarkable creativity, sensitivity and possess a genuine desire to make a difference in the life of their students. Such teachers are always there for their students and are concerned about all issues which they face. They are genuine and authentic and do not need to fake love, care or understanding for applause/social media. They have a positive and meaningful connection with students in the classroom. Unfortunately the number of such dedicated professionals is less.
The problem lies not in the generation but in the lack of guidance, mentorship and value-based training for the young teachers. The gap between human sensitivity and technological proficiency may be bridged. Institutions must focus not only skill enhancement but also focus on cultivating emotional intelligence, awareness on ethical responsibility and foster reflective practices. The young teachers can also imbibe a lot from the senior teachers but rather than doing this the youngsters resort to manipulation, people pleasing and dirty politics which no longer makes teaching a noble profession in today's times.
In the end, one must enter the profession of teaching not by looking at the perks its brings but by understanding that you are going to shape generations through what you do in class. If your students see you teaching from Chat GPT, they will do the same and you will lose your face. If you have not mentored your students efficiently they will never have genuine respect for you. You can fake to be cordial and sweet talk with them but you will never earn genuine respect and trust. Students will do everything that you say but deep down they know who you are. Be a teacher only if you have the spirit of being a learner everyday. Be a teacher who is a nurturer and who genuinely cares for the problems of students. Be a teacher who is willing to upgrade on a daily basis and also engage in meaningful discussions with her class. Be a teacher who is remembered for her authenticity, honesty and above all for the life lessons you teach through your imparted knowledge and experiences.
